Gouache is having a moment. Traditionally used for illustration that is now replaced by digital painting, fine artists are picking it back up. It is pigment rich and opaque, but water based and very portable. You don't need a studio or even an easel. You could paint on your kitchen table or on your lap on a bench in Paris. However, it can be very frustrating to just pick up and try to teach yourself. You really need someone to show you the tricks to getting the consistency correct and explain the difference in types of gouache and paper. Artists who work in watercolor, acrylic or oils will enjoy experimenting with gouache, but no art making experience is required. Using artist grade gouache, we start off doing color mixing exercises, look at some examples of gouache artists, and end with painting individual simple still lifes from observation. This skills workshop is designed to not only introduce you to this wonderful medium, but also to how to paint the colors of light and shadow on a simple still life. About the Instructor: Anne Pfeiffer paints in both gouache and oils and has had a long career as a high school and college art instructor and has a masters degree in painting. She teaches gouache classes and workshops regularly at Northwind Art in Port Townsend (as well as other media), exhibits her work in group shows regularly, and is a member of Plein Air Washington Artists. Materials Provided: gouache paint, watercolor pads, brushes, mixing trays Attendees should bring: Participants are invited to bring their favorite dip or appetizer to celebrate the theme!
