Paper crafting is an intuitive flow art that shifts between the shape being cut out and the space remaining. Participants will create their own design on paper and explore scale using overhead projectors and flashlights to create shadows. About the Instructor: Growing up on a remote island surrounded by forest, seaside and coastal winds, Heather Spark's childhood was shaped by elemental richness and the innovations of an artist family. Long hours were spent as a family, surrounded by colourful textiles, recycled paper, and an array of found materials, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, trash into treasure. At the heart of every piece was an eye for what made a salvaged item unique and a tenderness in execution: cutting, folding, drawing out the magic of each. Out of the confetti and colour strewn "crafty box", sheets of paper bloomed into increasingly more intricate works of art: shimmering star boxes for holding things, paper craft whirligigs, spinners, and school lunch bags unfolded with pop up surprises. What began as a humble craft relationship has transformed into an ever growing journey of innovation. Sparks papercraft technique lends itself to costume design, stop motion animation, live performance, and in recent years, metal art. Spark's portable installation, Shadow Sail Theater, provides interactive, immersive space for the public to layer cut paper designs in the creation of large-scale moving murals. Sparks consistently strives to be a supportive and connecting force in the world of art, utilizing the fragility of paper to form strong bonds.
